The University College of Opera, Stockholm
(Operahögskolan i Stockholm)
Operahögskolan i Stockholm traces its history back to 1772 when King Gustavus III founded the Royal Opera. From then until 1968 the education of opera singers took place under either the auspices of the Royal Opera or the Royal Academy of Music (Kungliga Musikhögskolan). An independent school of opera was founded in 1968 and Operahögskolan i Stockholm is now a fully-fledged university college.

Operahögskolan educates singers, répétiteurs and opera directors. It has around 40 students, including 36 singers.
Our aim is to integrate vocal and musical study with physical and dramatic training. We equip singers with tools for the independent preparation of operatic roles. Répétiteurs and opera directors are given the complex skills they need to coach and direct opera in the 2lst century.

The three-year Bachelor’s degree programme provides a complete education for the aspiring opera singer. Subjects of study include voice, solo and ensemble singing, repertoire, role and language studies, drama, movement and stagecraft, and opera history. Individual practical and group tuition is complemented by lectures and seminars on all aspects of opera.

The two-year Master’s degree programme is for singers who already possess a Bachelor’s degree and/or have significant experience of professional work within opera or music theatre.

There are also two-year advanced Master’s degree programmes for répétiteurs and opera directors that have their own individual structure, but share several components with the programmes for singers.

All programmes are full-time and are designed to prepare young artists for a professional career in opera. The selection of new students takes place annually by competetive audition held in front of a jury. To apply:
- You should be at least 20 years old and have completed upper secondary school or its equivalent; in addition,
- You will have excellent general musical skills and musicianship and are likely to have already completed several years of study at a music college or equivalent;
- You should be free of any voice or speech impediment requiring special treatment and able to take part in regular physical training;
- You should be able to take part in a series of entrance auditions to be held in Stockholm March 22 – 26, 2010.

Those with little or no knowledge of Swedish are welcome to apply, but successful applicants will be required to study the Swedish language during their time at the college.
